“It is an honor to see this world come to life and be part of this whole process,” he tells Shondaland. Though the film spent years in what Chainani describes as “development hell,” he’s enormously happy with the finished product. Directed by Paul Feig ( Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters), the film features an all-star cast including Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Yeoh, and Ben Kingsley. Now, Chainani’s beloved fictionalized world is coming to the screen, with a film adaptation airing on Netflix on October 19. The book - about two girls whose friendship is tested when one, a beauty who believes she will be a princess, is taken to the School for Evil, and the other, a supposed witch, is taken to the School for Good - became the first in a New York Times best-selling series, with six books and a prequel selling more than 3 million copies worldwide. Since the publication of his debut novel, The School for Good and Evil, in 2013, Soman Chainani has been praised for his ability to subvert traditional fairy tales in favor of more diverse, complex characters and narratives.
